The first Tarus Deephole Drilling Machines were built in the early 1970's. We have always focused on machines for Mold Makers, but Tarus machines are also in use by Precision Machine shops and for drilling large tube sheets for heat exchangers. The latest Tarus Deephole Drilling Machines have benefited from years of experience and design evolution, and are now, without question, the best designed, the best built, and most user friendly Deephole Drilling Machines for the Mold Shop.
The new Tarus Heavy Duty Deep Hole Drilling Machine, is manufactured utilizing welded steel, egg-crate construction and stress relieved for enhanced stability. The machine tables are available in both standard 96 inch or 144 inch lengths or with the new rotary table.

The machine comes equipped with a 30 horsepower primary drill, capable of either standard or STS drilling up to 2” in diameter and 84” deep. The Tarus exclusive chip conveyor facilitates easy chip removal and oil recovery to a filtered multi-chambered in-ground 700 gallon settling tank. This oil is reused via programmable flow control at rates ranging from 0 to 50 GPM.

The machine is also equipped with a 30 horsepower auxiliary spindle capable of Tapping, Chamfering, Spot-Facing, Counterboring, Slot Cutting, Face Milling, and Compound Thread Milling. Machine critical components are protected from chips and fluids by industrial grade guarding and a Nema12 rated enclosure for electronics.

The machine controls are latest generation drives and components interfaced to a state of the art panel mount PC running proprietary operators software “EasyCNC” featuring can cycles capabilities through Windows XP.

Additional Design Details of the New Tarus Heavy Duty Hole Drilling Machine
CAT 50 Milling Spindle is Integrated in the Machine Design, Not an “Add-On”
The Tarus Gundrill incorporates a 30Hp (22.5kW) continuous duty auxiliary milling spindle. This combined with the above described and being “fully integrated” into the machine allows for a far greater flexibility in use and performance.

Pressurized Nitrogen Strut for Vertical Axis Counterbalance Assist
The Tarus Gundrill incorporates a Nitrogen on Oil accumulator to facilitate the requirements of counterbalancing the vertical mass. This arrangement has several advantages; the “compactness” of the unit allows mounting the assembly within the column of the machine, there is no “pump” assembly with its related power, noise and heat issues to be concerned with not to mention the inevitable repairs necessary upon a pump type counterbalance arrangement. This in turn precludes the typical changing of hydraulic oil as necessitated with pump based systems.

Traversing Column for W Axis
The Tarus Gundrill incorporates a column that moves in and out to meet the job. This eliminates any potential sag related to those machines that use a traversing “carrier”. This also facilitates a much more “rigid” platform from which to carry out the heavy duty auxiliary milling functions for which this machine is capable.

Optional Rotary Work Table
The rotary table is an infinitely positional “heavy load” rated assembly capable of supporting up to 50,000 lbs. This design coupled with a Tarus exclusive “probe and go” routine for orientating the job allows for rapid job pick up which in turn allows for rapid throughput.

Remote Drilling Oil Tank
The 700 gallon Tarus oil reservoir is designed for flexibility relative to placement. Its unique design allows for in-ground placement of the tank. This allows gravity to take over the job of getting the oil “back to the tank” and allows for the assembly to be covered thereby reducing noise generated by the system. This flexibility is such that if the customer requires it the whole unit may be remotely placed (outside if so desired so long as the unit is enclosed.)
